Whittier's Commitment to Inclusive Recreation: A Haven for Neurodivergent Individuals

City initiatives and community programs foster accessible and engaging environments for all residents

Exclusive

Whittier, California, has long been recognized for its dedication to creating inclusive spaces that cater to the diverse needs of its community members.

Among these efforts, the city's Adaptive Recreation Program stands out as a beacon of support for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Designed for residents aged 14 and older, this program offers a variety of activities aimed at promoting social interaction, creative expression, emotional well-being, and physical health.

Participants are encouraged to have a family member or caretaker present during activities, ensuring a supportive environment for all involved.

For more information, interested parties can contact the Whittier Community Center at (562) 567-9470 or via email at adaptiverec@cityofwhittier.org.

In addition to the Adaptive Recreation Program, Whittier offers the Whittier Youth Network (WYN) Club, a drop-in, outdoor recreation initiative hosted at elementary schools during the school year and city parks throughout the summer.

This program provides a variety of recreational activities designed to keep children active and engaged year-round.

For more details, the Whittier Community Center can be reached at (562) 567-9430 or via email at youth.services@cityofwhittier.org.

Beyond city-run programs, the Whittier Wellness Community offers a range of free activities and support services aimed at enhancing the well-being of all community members.

Located at 7643 S. Painter Ave., the center provides resources related to mental health, substance use, and general wellness.

Operating hours are Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For more information, call (562) 775-6104 or email WhittierWC@ph.lacounty.gov.

For those interested in adaptive sports, the Triumph Foundation offers programs that provide individuals with disabilities opportunities to engage in activities such as handcycling, kayaking, and archery.

These programs are designed to push the limits of participants' abilities and enhance their quality of life.

More information can be found on their website.

Whittier's commitment to inclusivity is further evident in its Parks Master Plan, which outlines strategies to provide accessible, well-maintained, and diverse park facilities and programming for residents and visitors alike.

This plan serves as a guide for the long-term management, investment, development, and maintenance of parks and recreation facilities over the next decade.

By offering a variety of programs and facilities tailored to the needs of neurodivergent individuals, Whittier continues to foster a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

For more information on these programs and facilities, residents are encouraged to reach out to the respective organizations or visit their websites.
